You are Martin, I am Malcolm is work created in response to the recent 2020 spotlight on the Black Lives Matter movement.
During a detailed conversation with a friend, in which we discussed some of the vocalised responses we saw online from members of the black community (and of which we both are a part of) she turned to me and said: “you are Martin, I am Malcolm”. This is in reference to Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X who both fought for the rights of Black people during America’s Civil Rights Movement, using different approaches.
You are Martin, I am Malcolm incorporates the use of cardboard; this is a material used frequently in protests, whilst the black ink is in keeping with much of the Black Lives Matter regalia.
